Chapter 6: Aphrodisiacs

274. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of sensuality and around 1,000 different foodstuffs have, at some time in history, been claimed to be aphrodisiacs – in other words, they arouse sexual desire. So if you’re looking for added fun, then don’t waste any time in trying some of these out.

275. Aphrodisiacs were first sought out to help aid sexual impotency because procreation was important in both society and religion. These days, people try all sorts of sexy foods and visual tools to turn their partner on – give it a go – you’ve got nothing to lose.

276. It must be said that the effectiveness of most aphrodisiacs is unproven but it’s easy to try any of them out and you may find that eating a supposed aphrodisiac with your partner is in itself, arousing.

277. Although the effects of many aphrodisiacs can be in the mind, don’t worry – if you think that oysters turn you on, they probably will.

278. Something as simple as wearing sexy lingerie can be an incredible aphrodisiac and a very visual stimulant to your partner and give your love life a new dimension.

Bird intestines, semen, menstrual blood, a wolf’s penis, donkey testicles, rhinoceros horn (that’s where the word ‘horny’ originates), snails, sparrows, raw turtle eggs, Spanish fly beetles, and even the penis of a hedgehog (if you can find it amongst all those pricks…) have all been reported to be aphrodisiacs. However, our advice is not to try any of these unless you really want to!

280. Oysters are one of the best-known aphrodisiacs and have long been revered for their supposed sexual qualities. This is, in part, down to the fact they resemble a vagina. There is also scientific evidence that foods rich in salt and phosphorus can help to create a healthy sex life.

281. Anchovies are even richer in these salts so, in theory, these pungent little fish are an even better aphrodisiac – if you can stand them!

282. Chocolate – especially the dark and bitter variety – is claimed by some people to be an aphrodisiac because it contains small amounts of the chemical, phenylethylamine. However, studies have shown that this is broken down by the body before it can reach the brain. Still, if you enjoy eating chocolate and it puts you in a good mood, then sit down with your partner and tuck into a large box of your favourite chocolates and indulge yourselves in more ways than one!

283. Pineapple is often regarded as a homeopathic cure for impotency. It’s also full of vitamin C and natural sugar, which gives you a quick energy boost. Why not try knocking up a rum and pineapple cocktail on a hot summer’s night and see where things lead?

284. Asparagus is a popular aphrodisiac, not least because of its phallic shape. However, it also contains potassium, which is good for semen production, and is an excellent source of folic acid. Boil or steam asparagus lightly and serve with butter or olive oil. Feed it to each other for an erotic experience.
